Terms of use
What the site is
Deliberate Conduct publishes general information about Stoic philosophy and how it can be applied to everyday life. It is written for education and reflection.
Nothing on the site is medical, psychological, legal, financial or other professional advice, and reading it does not create any professional relationship with us. Articles that discuss anxiety, grief, anger, decisions or money describe ideas, not treatment or recommendations for your situation. If you are struggling, or the stakes are significant, talk to a qualified professional where you live.
We work to keep the information accurate, as described on our about page, but we do not guarantee that it is complete, error-free or up to date.
Using and sharing our content
The text, illustrations and design of the site belong to Deliberate Endeavours or are used with permission. You may link to any page, share it, and quote short passages for commentary, teaching or discussion, with credit and a link to the original. You may not republish full articles, reuse the illustrations, or present our work as your own without written permission. Quotations from ancient authors come from translations in the public domain, which remain free for everyone to use. Books by modern authors are quoted briefly for commentary and remain the property of their owners.
Things you send us
If you email us, you keep the rights to what you write. We will not publish your message, or any detail that identifies you, without your explicit permission.
Other websites
We link to other websites, including the sources we cite and our newsletter, Stoic Override, which is hosted on its own site under its own terms. We do not control other sites and are not responsible for their content, availability or privacy practices.
Limitation of liability
The site is provided “as is” and “as available”. To the extent permitted by law, we are not liable for any loss or damage arising from your use of the site or from decisions you make based on its content. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of New Mexico, United States. If you are a consumer, you also keep any protections given to you by the law of the place where you live.
Privacy policy
Data we collect, situation by situation
| Situation | What we receive | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Reading the site | Aggregate visit statistics, with no cookies and no individual profile | To know which pages are useful |
| Writing to us | Your email address and your message | To reply |
The site has no comment forms, no accounts for readers and no newsletter form of its own. The site’s server keeps routine technical logs, including IP addresses, for security and to keep the site working. They are deleted after a short period.
The newsletter
Stoic Override is run on its own site. If you subscribe there, your address is handled under that site’s privacy policy, not on deliberateconduct.com.
Analytics
If visits are measured, they are measured with Umami, a privacy-focused tool that does not use cookies, does not build profiles and reports only totals, such as page views, referring sites, device types and countries.
Service providers
We use a web host to run the site. It processes data on our behalf and under our instructions, and it may be located outside your country, including in the United States. We do not sell personal data, and we do not share it for advertising.
How long we keep data
Correspondence is kept for as long as it is useful to the conversation. Server logs are deleted on a rolling basis.
Your rights
You can ask us to tell you what data we hold about you, to correct it, to give you a copy, or to delete it. Depending on where you live, for example in the European Union, the United Kingdom or California, you may have additional rights under local law, including the right to complain to a data protection authority. Where a legal basis is required, we rely on our legitimate interest in operating and securing the site, and on your consent when you write to us. Send requests to [email protected]. We answer within 30 days.
Cookies
The site does not use advertising or tracking cookies. Our cookie page explains the few technical cookies WordPress may set.
Children
The site is intended for adults and is not directed at children under 16. We do not knowingly collect their personal data.
Changes
When these terms or this policy change, the date at the top changes too.
